STANDING ON THE SHOULDER OF GIANTS (Big Brother)
After two years of changing line-ups and growing bad hair, we might expect something new from Britain's biggest band; drum loops, samples, perhaps even a song without guitars. Instead we've got Oasis-by-numbers; meandering melodies you've heard before. Noel can seemingly only write one kind of song; Liam's voice - in fine abrasive fettle here - is increasingly the band's backbone. Opening rocker "F***ing In The Bushes" promises much, and highlights like the Stone Roses-esque "Who Feels Love?" and "Gas Panic!" almost deliver. It's just that now, after The Charlatans, they're only the North's second best band.
