- THE MASTERPLAN (Creation)
- ALBUM OF THE MONTH
- This is what they call a holding operation. Oasis have nothing new on offer for the yuletide market, so what better way to pay off those tax bills than release a collection of favourite B-sides, chosen by net-surfing fanatics with a few band suggestions chucked in?
- Typically, Noel Gallagher has already dismissed "The Masterplan", probably because it falls between two sweaty mushrooms. Unlike The Smiths' "Hatful Of Hollow" or REM's "Eponymous", it isn't definitive; hardcore types won't find anything unusual here. Still, "Acquiesce" and "Swamp Song" have both been barnstorming live show openers, while "Stay Young" and the title track could have cut it as A-sides.
- Bad men got here first with the "Definitely Flipsides" bootleg and Creation could have followed suit by including "Columbia", "Round Are Way", the vinyl-only "Sad Song" and "D'You Wanna Be A Spaceman". They didn't, yet the likes of "It's Good (To Be Free)" and Noel's acoustically whimsical "Half The World Away" are oldies but goldies. Next Christmas? Probably a live album with Roger Dean artwork. Just remember it's only a Northern song - and Bonehead was the Walrus.
