Before Paul Weller appears, an MC [Noel Gallagher as it turns out] bellows, "For what you are about to receive, may Mod make you truly thankful!" over the PA. With absolutely no hint of irony. Oblivious to the announcement's innate horrendousness, Paul turns up and plays some songs, which people like an awful lot. It's a well-advised set - mainly hits (and those are mainly from recent years, "Friday Street", "Sunflower", "Wild Wood"), alongside a few album tracks and oldies - it's a good gig.
But it's a bad show....It's only at the end, when surprise guest (and what a surprise!) Noel Gallagher appears for a rendition of the Dr John song "Walk On Gildered Splinters" and receives the most enthusiastic cheer of the evening, that we realise how true that is....
