8 FOOT SATIVA :
BLEED THE PAIN

New Zealand's "8 Foot Sativa" have made quite a big name for themselves back home, but even with two albums prior to "Bleed The Pain", they are still virtually unknown on the international market. Not being a member of the "420" club myself, I was not familiar with the origins on the band's odd moniker, but a simple search reveals that "Cannabis sativa" is the proper name of the herb more commonly known as hemp or marijuana. Since there is a big-ass pot leaf imbedded in their logo, I should have guesses as much. By the way, while we're lookin' at that cover, what the hell is that thing? This dude looks like some rejected character design from the Predator movies. However, that's not really important, it's the music we're here to check out. Well, what can I tell ya, "Bleed The Pain" is pretty damn heavy! Genre wise, I'm not sure where to place them. The vocals are very harsh, sometimes crossing over into the realm of our friend the Cookie Monster, there are elements of Thrash, Death, strong Pantera-isms, and something that just sounds like sledgehammers pounding you in the face. I guess I'll have to use the Metal reviewer's standard copout and just call 'em "extreme" Metal. At least with this band being so monstrously heavy, the term actually fits for a change. When you first start playing the disc, it hits you full on, and head-banging is unavoidable, however, as things progress, it's just more and more of the same, so by the time track nine finally rolls around, you've already been planning what to play next for about two songs. They have a good sound, and they have a serious edge, they just need to mix it up a bit. On an interesting note, just today (I read the news while writing this review) it was announced that drummer Sam Sheppard and his brother, vocalist Matt Sheppard have left the band due to the now ultra-cliche "irreconcilable differences." Well... so much for that then... For more info, check out 8footsativa.com.
