ACHERON :
TRIBUTE TO THE DEVIL'S MUSIC

I just recently reviewed the band's latest disc, "Rebirth", (see bellow). Earlier this year however, the band also released this sweet compilation CD. Over the band's long career, they have recorded numerous covers for numerous tribute CDs. If you're a long time fan of the band, I'm sure you've gone close to insane trying to find them all. Well, now all your work was for nothing, as we now have them all in one place. The band covers their favorites from obscure bands such as; Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath), Death (Evil Dead), Celtic Frost (Dawn Of Meggido), Iron Maiden (Wrathchild), Kreator (Flag Of Hate), Motorhead (Don't Need - Religion), Kiss (War Machine), Mercyful Fate (Room Of Golden Air), Bathory (Raise The Dead), Judas Priest (Devil's Child), and Venom (Countess Bathory). Plus, they added one Acheron original, "Ave Satanas", which is itself, a stunning track. Most cover or tribute discs run in quality from pure shit to good, this one luckily runs from good to fucking awesome! Your favorite will obviously partly depend on your individual opinion of the band being covered. However, tracks like Frost's "Dawn Of Meggido" and Venom's "Countess Bathory" are sweet by anyone's standards. The Kiss and Priest tunes are kind of on the lower end of the scale, but still rock. A must for Acheron fans.

ACHERON :
REBIRTH : METAMORPHOSING INTO GODHOOD

How could this happen? How the fuck could a band this good, fly under my Metal radar for so many goddamn years? From the first few seconds of the intro (reminiscent of the beginning to Venom's 1981 masterpiece, "In League With Satan"), which sent shivers through my nuts, and made my pubes stand on end, I knew I had found something special. This stuff is just so unfathomably raw, powerful, and simply unbelievable. It's an evil thrashy Death-Metal beast that reeks of old-school influences (just witness the Celtic Frost inspired female vocal parts on the track "Xomaly" if you don't believe me). The production is basic, but it works wonderfully. "Rebirth" gives you back that feeling that you are really listening to something that you shouldn't, I feeling I haven't really felt in a long, long time. And unlike many of the fake evil/satanic bands out there, Acheron is the real deal. It all has to do with the devil-worshipping ways of leader and guitarist Vincent Crowley, who, in his spare time, once helmed a satanic youth group named the "Order of the Evil Eye". The band started out in 1988, and has released a truck load of shit since that time, demos, many CDs, as well as limited edition 7"s, and has made numerous compilation appearances. During their career, Crowley's anti-Christian views have gained the band far more notoriety than their music has. Crowley was even appointed a priest in the Church of Satan by none other than its founder, the infamous Anton Szandor LaVey himself! He was then later promoted to the rank of "Magister". He has since left the church, not because he is no longer a Satanist, but because he does not want to associate with any organization, and is now more open-minded to other occult ideas. The band has had its' ups and downs over the years, and even broke up in 1999, only to reform again in 2001. This newest platter, "Rebirth: Metamorphosing into Godhood", is like a sonic rulebook for becoming a full-fledged Satanist. Satanists hold the belief that each individual is a God unto himself, hence this disc's title, and soon to be banned worldwide cover art. If you can't tell from the small graphic, that is a nude woman giving birth to a horrific looking "devil-child" while hooded figures look on. The band's overall sound might not be very groundbreaking, or original, but they have perfected what they are doing. Each song is a gem of hatred unto itself. Songs like "Church Of One", and "Bow Before Me" are enough to send chills down your spine. It's like having all the early Slayer, Celtic Frost, and Venom records rolled into one. Fucking brilliant. The band oddly enough has two official web sites. For the years after the reformation, you can go to acheron666.com. For info on the band's past, you can check out this site.
