ALTERED AEON :
DISPIRITISM

Ok, here we have the debut offering from Swedish band "Altered Aeon" (formally known as "Thrawn"). The band is being billed as a "super-group" (take that with a grain of salt) as it happens to features a few dudes already established in the world of Metal. For the record, the band is; Kjell Andersson - vocals (Azotic Reign), Per Nilsson - guitar, Nicklas Rehn - guitar, Anders Hedlund - bass (Theory In Practice), and Henrik Ohlsson - drums (Theory In Practice / Mutant). Now, the band itself is fairly young, it was first established in 2001, but the line up didn't solidify until 2003. The sound they're going for is "Technical Occult Power Death-Metal"... um, ok, whatever. That could work, but really I'd have to replace "Death" with "Thrash", but that's all really besides the point. You see, the only point I need to drive home here is that, well... now how can I put this forth nicely, and in a professional manner befitting my responsibilities as a Metal journalist? Dispiritism doesn't so much kick-ass as it does well, suck-ass. I'm sorry, but I'm not beating around the bush, this is just plain bad. Although, somehow, there have been many good reviews of this posted on the web. I don't know how someone could even dream of giving this a score of 9 out of 10, but I've seen it with my own two disbelieving eyes. First of all, the clean-ish vocals are just bland an annoying, and secondly, there are no songs! There is nothing catchy or even remotely memorable anywhere on this disc! Sure it's heavy, and has some good performances, but it's like they're just playing random riffs, and unrelated passages that only form the semblance of songs because they happen to be lumped together into four minute sections. Call it what you will, Progressive Death, Power Thrash, whatever, it doesn't matter, because they're doing a great disservice to any sub-genre you feel like placing them in. Avoid.
