THE AMERICAN PLAG :
THE AMERICAN PLAG E.P.

The band known as The American Plague, comes at ya from Knoxville Tennessee. These guys are a straight-up Punk outfit, not that MTV Pop-Punk crap, but real, honest to god 70s inspired Punk! This CD E.P. was originally released on the band's own label (Plague Records) back in 2001 with only seven tracks. This time around it is being released by @ntidote Records with new artwork, and 2 new tracks. These guys are sort of an odd signing for @ntidote Records, which is a small label that over the last couple years has become the virtual epicenter in North America for Horror-Punk. However, I guess they know talent when they hear it, and why the hell should some other label get such a good band just because they don't quite fit in with the majority of the acts on your roster? The band consists of four veterans of the underground: main man Jaw (ex-The Undead / ex-The Malignmen), Dave Dammit (ex-Nocturna), T. Navare (ex-Galaxie), and Scott Oxendine (ex-Galaxie). Their sound can best be compared to the later era output from Sweden's "The Hellacopters", or if you want to know the roots of their sound, it's a combo of The Stooges, MC5, early Danzig, Ramones, and Johnny Thunders & the New York Dolls. Now, I mentioned good ol' Glenn Danzig in that list. I don't mean these guys sound all satanic or Metal, but every now and then, a vocal melody resembles that of the man in black's early solo stuff, especially during the new track "Man's Burden". The other new song on this version of the E.P. is a rockin' cover of David Bowie's "Suffragette City". The best part about this disc is how ridiculously easy it is to get into. This sort of edgy 70s Punk is a sound we all know and love, so when someone comes along doing it justice, it takes all of ten seconds before you're hooked. I only have two minor complaints regarding this CD. First of all, it clocks in at only 32:29. Yes, I know it's an E.P., but I want more. I'm just really getting into it, and bang! It's over. The second is the song "Without You", it's not horrendous or anything. This is simply a mellow tune that doesn't do anything for me. However, when eight out of nine kick ass, who an I to bitch? Now, I'm not sure which cover art is going to appear on the regular release of this disc. The @ntidote web page shows the lightning bolt logo cover you see above, my promo copy has a much sassier cover with a near naked woman in front of the American flag. Being a dirty filthy pig myself, I prefer the later of the two. For more info on this infectious plague, check out americanplague.com.
