AMORPHIS :
FAR FROM THE SUN

This CD actually came out in Europe last year (2003), and since that time vocalist Pasi Koskinen has announced that he is no longer a part of the band. . . to bad, his shoes will be hard to fill. So, anyway most of you will already be familiar with this disc. There have been a lot of lukewarm reactions to it, but I for one, think it's pretty damn good. It's not their "best ever" or anything like that, but it doesn't deserve some of the slagging it's gotten. The band's sound, which started in the early 90s as pure Death-Metal, has been morphing continuously ever since. Like Paradise Lost, over the years they have moved through the realms of Doom and Goth, and now find themselves in some strange world of almost mainstreamish Dark-Rock. This time out, the band sounds similar to where they were on 2001's "Am Universum", but have brought back more of the folk elements from 1996's "Elegy". Add some later-day Paradise Lost, and some occasional 70s influences, and you have "Far From The Sun". I find almost all of these tracks highly memorably, and unique, adding up to a very good release, probably something worthy of about a 7.5 rating. However, this US release also happens to have 5 bonus cuts, and a video included as well! Now, I don't usually let bonus songs affect a CD's score, either positively, or negatively. However, these extra songs are great (not to mention plentiful), and really add to the overall package. So I'm letting the extra goodies push this disc's score to nice round "8". For the record, the bonus cuts are; "Shining Turns Grey", "Follow Me Into The Fire", "Darkrooms" (was on the Japanese release as well), "Dreams Of The Damned", and "Far From The Sun" (acoustic version), plus there's the PC video for the song "Evil Inside". So, even if ya grabbed the import last year, you might want to consider "ebaying" that old copy, and picking up the new version. For more info, the band's on-line home is at amorphis.net.
