THE ANCIENT GALLERY :
DEINSTALLATION

Ancient Gallery is an Electronic/Industrial band from Germany with some Goth-inspired elements. Almost all of the lyrics are in German, so if you can't handle Rammstein for that reason, then skip to the next review. You're still reading? Good, because if you had skipped ahead, you would have missed out on this interesting diverse band. The vocals are more spoken (shouted/chanted) rather than sung, which adds to the band's industrial edge. Mellower interludes give way to monstrous guitar and drumming, then do a "180" back to the more subdued parts. So at times they sound like Ministry, and at others, closer to a dance band. The one song that has all English lyrics (by Charles Bukowski), "Sleep", seems to be about a man who suffers from insomnia, and an abusive wife, until his mind snaps, he then kills her, digs a hole, and buries her face down!! This seems to cure him! So you can only imagine what nasty, deranged topics are covered in the rest of the tunes. The songs are well constructed, and make a memorable impact on the first listen. So, if ya dig Rammstein, or lighter Industrial stuff, check this out. You can get more info on the band at their web site www.theancientgallery.de
RATING = 7 Industrial (Released 2001)

THE ANCIENT GALLERY :
KOPFDELAY - 4 TRACK PROMO

The Ancient Gallery are old friends of "the Pad", in fact, they were one of the first bands to ever send me something to review (2001's "Deinstallation"). Well, almost 2 years later, here is the band's latest offering, "Kopfdelay". I only have a 4-song sampler, so I really can not vouch for the disc as a whole. From what I can hear however, the band has really added some heaviness to their mix of Industrial-Goth. The first track, "Destinations" is simply brilliant. It's super heavy, but still filled with lots of grove, and hypnotic rhythms. The other three songs are also impressive, but none come close to repeating the experience of the opener. It's almost a shame that first song is so fuckin' great, cause now it makes the rest look inferior in comparison, that'll teach 'em to come up with something so damn good. I must say, I think this as a whole, is an improvement over "Deinstallation", and I hope the band keeps progressing in this harder edged vein. Still singing in their native tongue, German, will probably limit their global success, but of course, that's their problem, not mine. So if you used to like NIN, and now think they blow, this is probably close to what you're really looking for. These guys are now at the top of their genre.
RATING = 8 Industrial (Released 2002)
