ANTIQUUS :
RAMAYANA

This Power-Metal outfit hails from Vancouver Canada, they actually recorded this disc a couple years ago, but the release got delayed due to some line up shuffling. Now however, with all that sorted out, they seem to be back in the swing of things and have unleashed "Ramayana", one of the most ambitious indi releases I've heard from a Power-Metal band in a long time. The first thing that struck me, is that this is a lot heavier than I expected, plus there is an unexpected Progressive-Meta element happening as well. I guess the backbone of the band would be a strong "Iron Maiden" influence, but when needed, they can summon up the aggressiveness of "Slayer", or the refinement of "Dream Theater". I call the disc ambitious because the entire back half is made up of one long epic, multi-part song, ala Rush's 2112 album from the days of yore. If you were blown away by Iced Earth's recent epic "The Glorious Burden", which had a historical story running throughout, then this will probably be right up your alley as well. Basically, these kids have both the chops and the song writing ability to become a force in the realm of classic Power-Metal. The only thing I can find at fault here, is that a disc of such magnitude could have benefited heavily from a big-budget production. For more info, check the ban out at antiquus.net.
