ARENA :
PEPPER'S GHOST

I'll say up front, I'm not the best guy to be reviewing this. I like my Rock, Metal etc. to be heavy, dark, and edgy, or at least show some sign of rebelliousness. Hell, even the party-oriented lyrics of 80s Glam-Metal can be viewed as rebellious! This Yes-influenced Progressive-Rock act have been spitting out CDs since 1995, and have made quite a name for themselves in said circles. However, to me this comes across as the safest, most non-threatening, family-friendly music known to man. I've seen reviews that say this is heavier than their past efforts, well, they must be some pretty mellow discs in deed. Granted, not everything I listen to needs to be heavy as hell, I like a lot of Goth acts that are mellow as can be, but at least there is an underlying element of darkness or danger, something to take it out of the realms of easy listening or adult contemporary. Sure the musicianship on display here (from Clive Nolan - keyboards, Mick Pointer - drums, Rob Sowden - vocals, John Mitchell - guitars, and Ian Salmon - bass) is fantastic, but it all just sounds so upbeat and sappy, I almost expected to see prancing ballerinas floating out of my speakers. If you have young kids as I do, and they're getting tired of Barney and Wiggles CDs, then this would be an appropriate substitute. It makes Dream Theater and later day Queensryche look like Napalm Death in comparison. I just have a promo copy of this disc, but apparently the full version comes in a fancy package with a comic book... like that'll help... If you feel like being bored, check out the band here.
RATING = 3.5 Progressive-Rock (Released 2005)
