ASHES TO ASHES :
SHAPES OF SPIRITS

Yet another great band coming at from Oslo Norway… Born in 1992, Ashes To Ashes blend the sounds of many metal genres into a version of Goth-Metal they can call their own. Kenneth Brastad's vocals range from a deep, almost Peter Steele type, velvet croon, to a more James Hetfieldish snarl, when the songs pick up the tempo. There are also some great additional female vocals courtesy of Randi Hoftvedt, but not used enough in my opinion. The music itself is firmly planted in the world of Goth-Metal, but you can see traces of mid-era Metallica, Doom-Metal, and even some intricate guitar work, by Michael Stenberg, usually reserved for Progressive bands. Fans of Type-O-Negative, Paradise Lost, The 69 Eyes, and Katatonia should definitely get to know this band. The stand out performances on this debut disc include; the title track, the ten minute long "Gabriel", and the feisty "Castle In The Air". A band to watch, hopefully a major label will pick these guys up. The only down side I could really come up with, is that at times it sounds a little dated, like it was recorded 10 years ago.. but for some, that would be a plus! RATING = 7.5 Goth Metal (Released 2000)
