AT THE MERCY OF INSPIRATION :
GONE ARE THE DAYS

At The Mercy Of Inspiration, or ATMOI for short, have one of the most awkward, yet unique names in the world of Rock. These local Toronto Ontario boys have been polluting the local scene since 2000 with their brand of ultra-extreme Metal. Since their inception, they have released two demos, and 2 EPs upon the world. The EPs are 2002's "A Perfect Way To Kill An Evening", and this latest offering, "Gone Are The Days". My first exposure to this band, came from catching a live set they did while opening for the legendary Life Of Agony back in Feb. of '04. A strange match up to be sure, but it let me experience the intensity that is ATMOI live. These guys were on fire that night, and I recommend you read my review of that show. Anyway, in the live setting they were coming across as a sort of modern doom-edged Grindcore act. I don't know if it was the live setting, or maybe the older material, but on this four-track CD, it's a little different. Andre Zadorozny's vocals come across as a mix of Mille Petrozza (Kreator) and any number of Black-Metal screechers. That basically means that the vocals are rough, but not John Tardy rough. (If you have to be told who John Tardy is, stop reading my web page, and buy a clue). The music tends to combine the furious drum work of modern Death-Metal, while the guitars seem to enjoy mixing elements of both older Thrash bands, and newer, more avant-garde Black-Metal acts such as Samael. The end result is a highly enjoyable, yet intense listen. There are brief moments of mellowness to be found here and there, but don't even think of calling this Melodic Death-Metal, or I'll have to slap you up-side the head. I've spun this sucker at least seven or eight times now, and I grow fonder of it with each subsequent listen. My only point of creative criticism is that some more developed hooks would help ensure that the masses fall prey to ATMOI's sound. Because even though these kick ass while I'm listening to 'em. I'm hard pressed to remember the tune an hour later. If they incorporate this into their next release, they could have one seriously killer disc on their hands. RATING = 8 Blackened Death-encrusted Thrash Metal (Released 2004)
