AURA NOIR :
THE MERCILESS

Aura Noir are the first band to be signed to the new label, "Tyrant Syndicate Productions", set up by the fun-loving lads from Black-Metal legends Darkthrone, and "The Merciless" is the label's first release. This is the band's third full-length effort, and it is long over due, as it has been more than five years since 1998's "Deep Tracts of Hell", which was the last proper studio platter from the trio. It's easy to see why Darkthrone picked these guys to lead their new imprint, Aura Noir's sound is very basic, and incredibly old-school, mixing early Thrash elements with true, necro Black-Metal. The production is raw, cold and primitive. Bands that spring immediately to mind are; Sodom, Slayer, Voi-vod, Dark Angel, Celtic Frost, and good ol' Venom. The band does have some claim to the old sound, as they've been around in one form or another since '95, and along with Aggressor (drums, bass, guitars and vocals) and Apollyon (drums, bass, guitars and vocals), they also have Blasphemer (guitars) of Mayhem as a member. So, "The Merciless" gives us the sound that we all fell in love with almost 20 years ago from all those Pre-Black-Metal outfits, is it original? No, not really, but it's done exceptionally well, and with great passion. It's hard to reinvent the wheel, but Aura Noir do manage to add a few minor upgrades to the old blueprint. A fun listen, and an entertaining disc, but not quite on the same level as their label owners. For more info, check the band's web site out at auranoir.com.
RATING = 7.5 Thrashy Black-Metal (Released 2004)
