AUTOAGGRESSOR :
GRUNE SPHARE

"Grune Sphare" or Green Sphere as I believe it translates to in English, is the latest effort from Ambient noisemakers "Autoaggressor". It is fittingly dedicated to the memory of Jhonn (John) Balance of "Coil", who died late last year from a fall. The disc features twelve tracks (totalling over 76 minutes) of truly unsettling soundscapes. Many tags can be affixed to Autoaggressor's sound; Ambient, Gothic, Darkwave, Noise, Industrial, Soundtrack, and just plane weird. The way this disc is interpreted by the listener will depend on the individual person, as I'm guessing no two people are going to respond to this in the same way, or get the exact same feeling. To me, these tracks sound like they could be the musical scores to some lost 60s/70s Italian horror movies. The kind once made by Mario Bava, Antonio Margheriti, and Dario Argento. Some tracks bring visions of dark Gothic horrors, with their sinister shadowy castles, while others conjure up images of haunted monasteries, satanic nuns, and demonic possession. Well, I'm generally thinking of that sort of thing all the time anyway, but this does enhance the experience rather nicely. It is actually quite the task to make it through this whole disc in one sitting, but I think that was actually part of the goal, to try and make something so unnerving that one can barely take it. Pretty interesting stuff, these guys should do the sound track to the next Doom PC game. For more info on this bizarre entity, check out autoaggressor.com. As a side note, if you dig this band, or this type of music, you should check out the related side project "Implosion".
RATING = 7.5 Ambient (Released 2005)
