BALANCE OF POWER :
PERFECT BALANCE

It's strange, things seem to go in cycles, one month I'll get buried in Stoner Metal CDs, then this month it's Progressive Metal as far as the eye can see. So, I pulled a CD out of the growing pile, and it turned out to be Balance of Power's new offering. This is the band's fourth full length since their inception in '95. The sound on this well polished disc ranges from the heavier side of Prog-Metal ("Hard Life"), all the way to almost Journey-like mellowness ("Shelter Me"). There are also hints of European inspired Power Metal, and at times I am also reminded of Saigon Kick (remember them?). Lance King has a great set of pipes, the vocals are clean, but not squeaky clean, so he avoids that wuss factor that plagues many Prog vocalists. Good disc over all, not really a weak track in the bunch, however it's not gonna make you shoot a load in your pants or nothin'. There is also a down side, it's one of my biggest pet peeves… the dreaded nightmare of all collectors, alternate covers, and bonus tracks. If you're a fan of the band, get ready to take it in the ass, as the US, European, and Japanese releases all have different covers (US shown). Plus the Japanese version has 2 bonus tracks, and the US edition has a special CD-Rom enhancement for your PC. You say you want more info? Then check out www.balance-of-power.com
