BARATHRUM :
ANNO ASPERA - 2003 YEARS AFTER THE BASTARD'S BIRTH

Old-school Black-Metal from the depths of Finland, that's what's on order for Barathrum's eighth, and supposedly final album. Main man Demonos Sova has delivered yet another scathing slab of satanic darkness. The band has been around in one form or another since 1990, when they were originally known as "Darkfeast", since then they have been keeping things "true", and pretty freakin' grim. Hints or Death-Metal are added to a big-ass dose of pure Norwegian styled Black-Metal. Much of the music is mid-paced, well mid-paced for extreme Metal that is, and the riffs are simple, yet heavy as hell! For a while the band employed two bassist, but now they apparently have three! Yes, that's right, three! That must seem unreal live! The current line up, which changes on a regular basis, is; Demonos Sova - lead vocals / bass, Anathemalignant - guitar (might have left), Pelcepoop - guitar, Nuklear Tormentorr - bass, G'Thaur - bass / backing vocals, and Abyssir - drums. Style wise, this could be called a mix of later Immortal, early Mayhem, and later Satyricon. The song structures are all pretty simple, but for me, that's always how Black-Metal works best, raw, straight forward, in your face, and best of all, memorable! To tell you the truth, I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. My only complaint is that they could have trimmed that intro down a bit, but that's what "next" buttons are for. Anno Aspera comes highly recommended to all those who dream of a day when bullet-belts, smeared goat's blood, and corpse paint are an accepted fashion statement.
RATING = 8 Black-Metal (Released 2005)
