BBQ :
TIE YOUR NOOSE

First off, this is not a band. BBQ is just one man, a crazy Rock n' Roller by the name of Mark Sultan (Les Sexareenos / Spaceshits). Not only does he do it all himself on the album, he does it all himself live as well! That's right, sing, guitar, tambourine, and drums all simultaneously! The sound that Montreal's Mr. Q is hip to, is dirty old fashioned Garage-Rock, or as the press release sates "pre-frat '50s/ early '60s party music -pre-frat frat rock". Ok, I'll admit when I'm a tad out of my element. Garage-Rock I'm familiar with, but "frat rock" (let alone pre-frat, frat rock) is a little outside of the scope of my current Rock n' Roll edification. But, I knows whats I like, and I does like it. However, I can't say that I love it. It all kind of sounds like long lost demo tapes that might have been made by Buddy Holly one night while drunk and high on reefer. Depending on your point of view, that could be good or bad. Now, while I have no problem with rough, scratchy, garage-quality rock, with hints o' the blues and a speck of Rockabilly thrown in for good measure, these songs just don't seem to have the staying power I expected. It's cool to listen to, and maybe shake yer ass to, but it's all in one ear and out the other. So, it's fun, but kind of forgettable. Still, if the Garage scene is your main scene, I could see how this might rate a point or two higher. For more info on this one-man oddity, check out marksultan.com.
RATING = 6 Garage-Rock (Released 2005)
