BEATEN BACK TO PURE :
SOUTHERN APOCALYPSE

Formed in 1999, Beaten Back to Pure are a unique property indeed, imagine if you will, if members of Cannibal Corpse were to jam with your favourite southern Stoner band, well, the outcome would be "Southern Apocalypse". Ben spews out Guttural Death-Metal style vocals that would make Obituary's John Tardy proud, as the rest of the team churns out mid-paced, grinding slabs of heaviness, that bands like Queens Of The Stone Age wish they could achieve. The Stoner-Metal crowd will be enthralled, but possibly put off by such over the top vocals. Death-Metal fans will dig it, but will probably be begging for more speed. There are however a ton of sick bastards out there (me included) that think the merger of these two metal sub genres has been long over due, and no one will be able to deny the pure weight of this stuff as it oozes out from your speakers. So if you're a Kyuss fan, and thing you have the balls, or if you'd like a little more rock in your Death-Metal, I dare ya to give this a spin. You are witness to the birth of a new band, musical genre, and possibly a whole new scene to watch.
RATING = 7.5 Stoner-Death-Metal (Released 2001)

BEATEN BACK TO PURE :
THE LAST REFUGE OF THE SONS OF BITCHES

I love this band. I love the name, I love the gritty vibe, and I love the sound. These guys play a truly unique brand of Southern influenced Sludge-Metal. When you listen to this CD, you'll almost be able to smell the sweat, stale beer, and the lingering odor of cannabis that most have permeated the studio during its recording. Compared to their last release, "Southern Apocalypse", this offering seems more intense. The vocals, delivered by Ben Hogg, which I compared to Obituary last time, seem almost more extreme, and slower. Although the band never really gets much faster than what you would call mid-tempo, the overall groove of the disc seems more distinct, while at the same time the final thunderous outcome seems heavier. This disc makes Down look like Dokken in comparison. All eight songs on this disc are winners, there is absolutely no fat to be trimmed, the boys have really managed to craft a stellar piece of "Dirt-Metal" as they call it. It doesn't matter if you're into "High On Fire", or "Six Feet Under", either way, you're gonna dig this. If you don't, you're either not a real Metal fan, or there's something seriously wrong with you. This is Sludge-Metal for the undead. RATING = 8.5 Sludgy-Death-Metal (Released 2002)
