BELPHEGOR :
THE LAST SUPPER

This is the Austrian lads debut release from '95, now reissued with a but-load of bonus tracks. This early work shows a more Death-Metal side of the band, as apposed to the slightly more Black-Metal sound of today. There are even times on this disc where you can clearly hear the influence of such bands as Obituary, and other Florida based late 80s deathsters. There is a great variety on this CD, that is often lacking in the Black-Metal scene. Belphegor, pull back on the throttle every now and then, to bring in some unexpected sounds for atmosphere, and to add some mid-paced passages, that are a perfect head-baggin' speed, and really keep your interest all the way through. A great piece of metal, that illustrates the passing of the torch, as the old genera (Death-Metal), makes way for the new (Black-Metal). No card carrying Satanist should be caught without this on his or her shelf.
RATING = 8.5 Black-Metal (Released 1995/2001)

BELPHEGOR :
BLUTSABBATH

Belphegor is one of Austria's premier Black/Death-Metal bands, and with good reason. Originally released in '97, "Blutsabbath" has been out of print for some time, but now, all you sick freaks, who missed it on the first time around, can bath in its evil glory, with this reissue on World War III / Mercenary Musik. This nine-track slab of hatred, is filled with intense Slayer-esque riffing, layered over precision, unrelenting blast beats. The vocals are so guttural, that you would swear, vocalist Marius, is puking his guts up onto the studio floor while recording these vicious anthems. The only draw back to this CD, is that unlike their debut "Last Supper", the band chooses not to experiment. Instead of going for a "nice" creepy atmosphere, which the previous disc had, they instead decided they would grab your nuts on the first note, and proceed to pound them into submission until the last song is over, without a single second for you to catch your breath. On the other hand, the purity, and ferocious constant attack, has to be admired.
RATING = 7.5 Black-Metal (Released 1997/2001)
