THE BEREAVED :
DARKENED SILHOUETTE

The bio calls The Bereaved a new Swedish Death-Metal band, which confirms my suspicions (not that they needed any confirmation) that no one out there has a friggin' clue what Death-Metal is any more! I would have to say that this can't be classified as anything but Thrash, something like a (sub-par) mix of The Haunted and old-school Kreator. One could try (unsuccessfully) to make the argument for Melodic Death-Metal, and there is a dose of that Gothenburg sound here, but in the end, this is still a Thrash record. To top things off, it's not a very entertaining one either. It doesn't come right out and blow goat balls or anything, but this is a pretty solid lesson in mediocrity. We've all been here before, countless better bands have treaded this same territory, and I see no reason why we need to spend our time (or money) on a third tier band trying to plow the same sonic field. Even when reading their bio, you get the impression that the band is kind of lazy and directionless, (after forming the band, they went months before they even had a rehearsal!?) and those elements have turned up on the album as well. Yes it's heavy, and if I was seeing them play live in a club with a beer or two already in me, they might inspire me to hit the pit, but that's not saying a whole helluvalot. I think you get the idea, it's just a by the numbers, and predictable affair. Plus, before I go, what the hell is going on with that album cover? Is that a bedpan? For more info, the lads hang out at thebereaved.tk.
