Betty Blowtorch is the physical manifestation of the reaction to the enormous push of political correctness, and the cotton candy sweet boy/girl bands that have dominated pop music in the last few years. We have 4 tattooed women from LA, who want nothing more than to drink, play rock n roll, party, and fuck everything that moves. The biggest musical influence here is obviously early L7. Signer, Bianca Butthole, sounds almost exactly like Donita Sparks. L7 should take note: this is how you rock, listen to this CD, and then, listen to your last P.O.S. "Slap-Happy". Now tell me, which disc has more balls? Certainly not Slap-Happy. Aside from being a breath of fresh air, these 4 babes can really play, they are not just some lame novelty band dreamed up by some suit, they got game. Plus, any band that has the guts to have Vanilla Ice guest on a track (Size Queen), has got to be kool. The CD also features such thought provoking songs as, "Shut Up And Fuck", "Part-Time Hooker", and the favorite of PTA members everywhere, "Rock 'N Roll 69". So if you miss the days of LA-sleaze, and rock n roll decadence, or if you need a fix of L7 while they try and get their act together, come see if your man enough for Betty Blowtorch.

LAST CALL

If you follow the world of Rock & Metal news, then you probably know that Bianca Butthole (AKA Bianca Halstead), the notorious bassist of Betty Blowtorch perished in a car accident back in December of 2001. It was after a gig in New Orleans, Bianca accepted a ride back to her hotel from a fan, unknown to her at the time, he was too drunk to drive. He lost control of the speeding corvette and skidded into oncoming traffic. Bianca was dead instantly, the driver is now in jail. What makes this even more depressing is that Bianca had been clean and sober for 10 years. It was the end of Betty Blowtorch. The band had started out on their musical path as "Butt Trumpet", they released a CD in 1995 called "Primitive Enema", broke up, and then regrouped in 1998 as Betty Blowtorch. Duff McKagan of Guns n Roses fame, produced an EP for the band in '99 called "Get Off", which now is impossible to find, and if you do find it, it'll cost ya. Their only full-length outing was 2001's "Are You Man Enough" (see review above). This new CD is a collection of rarities; we have the tracks from the Get Off EP, demos, out takes, Butt Trumpet rarities, live stuff, and some interview clips. In all there are 24 songs, and 5 interview tracks. A very full disc. The songs are fun, rebellious, and chock full of attitude. This was truly a band that new how to have a blast, and the CD should appeal to both Metal-Heads and Punks alike. A personal favorite of mine from the disc, is an unreleased recording of the schoolyard hit song we all sang as kids, "Diarrhea", classic. Plus you'll also get such parent pleasing songs as : "Fish Taco", and songs no one thought would be released like "I Wanna Be On Epitaph". As a whole, the quality varies song-to-song depending on the source, but it is a great listen, and a fitting tribute to Bianca. If you're a new comer, I would suggest picking up 'Man Enough first, but you might as well grab this a t the same time and save yourself a second trip to the CD shop. What a shame things turned out as they did. The other members of the band have now moved on, Blare N. Bitch is in the "Blare Bitch Project", and Judy Molish and Sharon Needles are now in "Stay At Home Bomb". Maybe the magic will strike again for the girls. For now, grab a beer, and let your self be sonically transported to a party far, far away.
