BEAUTY FOR ASHES :
DEMO 2003

Beauty For Ashes had given it up, but recently decided that they had to go on delivering their brand of Goth-Rock to the masses, and so are now back together for our listening pleasure. The band, featuring; John Citarelli - guitar, Joseph Cuozzo - vocals, John Hummel - drums, and Ed Avila - bass, resides in N.J., about 20 minutes outside of New York City. This is their latest demo effort. For a change, unlike every other Goth band, this band's influences are not based on the Sisters Of Mercy, instead influences come from bands such as early Cure and David Bowie. The music is mellow, yet dark, but with a ray of hope. The band has a strong religious theme going on in their lyrics, and even the name "Beauty For Ashes" is taken from a passage out of the Bible, Isaiah, chapter 61, "To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, to comfort all who mourn and provide to those who grieve in Zion. To bestow upon them a crown of righteous, and to give them beauty for their ashes". But putting beliefs aside, the songs are impressive, they have a loose dreamy feel to them, and wind their way into your head with minimal effort. The biggest surprise on the disc is the unexpected cover of the Stevie Nick's classic "Stand Back", which apparently has become a local live and club hit for the band. Beauty For Ashes wants to save us, but if the legions of white-faced, black-clad Goth kids wants to saved remains to be seen. For more info, you can find them on line at beautyforashes.com.
