BIG MIDNIGHT :
EVERYTHING FOR THE FIRST TIME

There Seems to be quite a resurgence in this type of music going on. What type you ask? Well, it's this 70s influenced garage Punk, the type the Strokes have been making popular. But fuck the Strokes, Big Midnight have this shit down, and could easily make the Strokes their bitches given the chance. Plus, Big Midnight is a way cooler name. This debut CD, on "Alive Records", sounds like a mix of early Rolling Stones and the Stooges. Maybe if the members of the Stones were still in their 20s, this is what they would sound like. Fans of bands like later era Hellacopters will be creamin' over this release. The band has the perfect retro image to go with the music as well, those big-ass old-looking sunglasses, jean jackets, bad 70s Punk hair cuts, and blue jeans that are way too tight if they ever wanna have kids in the future. Sure, it all seems kind of manufactured when you think about it, but when the tunes are this slick, we'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt. You know, they always say don't judge a book (or CD) by its cover, but from this cover I knew exactly what this disc was gonna sound like, and that I was gonna like it. This band of retro Punks consists of singer/guitarist Shea Roberts and bassist Chris Beltran (both formally of "The Richmond Sluts") plus drummer KC Kozak and guitarist Elisha Drons. A great mix of bluesy ballads, raunchy rockers, and pure old-school rock and roll, that is instantly appealing. You won't have to waste any time letting it "sink in" or "grow on you". This is one of those discs that could easily please any age demographic from about 10 - 60. With the right promotion behind them, they should be soon raking in the accolades alongside such bands as the Hives, the Vines, and the White Stripes. If they could snag a tour with the Stones, or Iggy Pop, they would have it made. For us fans, it'll be more fun if they remain in the underground, but in the end, everybody needs to get paid.
RATING = 8 70s-Rock/Punk (Released 2003)
