BILLY BUTCHER :
PENNY DREADFUL

Guitarist and vocalist Billy Butcher, from Vancouver Canada, plays old-fashioned, booze encrusted, Southern influenced, gritty, bluesy Rock 'n' Roll in the grand tradition of George Thorogood, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, David Wilcox, and The Allman Brothers Band. However added to this fine tradition of whisky-soaked music for the blue-collar under dog, is a harder edge, which is almost reminiscent of the Cult's 1987 classic "Electric" opus. The end result, which is featured on this debut disc, sounds something like a vintage Thorogood record, but one with a more serious tone, and packed with enough balls to please a hard-core AC/DC fan. Billy's real name is Pete(r) Parker, and I'm sure he is still thanking his parents for that nifty web-slinging moniker. (Apparently the name Clark Kent was already taken). The other two in this trio are Rick Thulin on bass and Rick Fedyk on drums. Billy, who looks like a bald-headed version of Kid Rock with twice the attitude, and all hopped-up on Goofballs, has a good set of pipes to accompany his guitar licks. He has one of those voices that is rough but not too rough, and clean, yet not too clean. Actually, at times, he hits these odd notes that kind of remind me of Ian Astbury (Cult / Holy Barbarians)! The songs are all catchy, low-down, and mean. Almost every cut is guaranteed to get the toes a tappin'. You would swear the band must hail from one of the toughest parts of the southern US, and not from the great white north. This is the true background music one would expect to hear in questionable looking pool halls, redneck bars, dives, and anyplace where you can score drugs and moonshine with ease 24-7. If you like to kick back, and let the night slip away while you polish off a bottle of "Jack", then it's a good bet you'll dig this disc.
