THE BLACK LIPS :
THE BLACK LIPS

Where do I start with Atlanta Georgia's Black Lips? Well, I'll just come out with it and say, I didn't enjoy this disc, in fact, it was down right painful at times. This is Garage-Rock gone wrong. The bio that accompanied the disc compares the band to the early recordings of the Cramps, as well as the Dwarves... I guess the argument for that case can be made, but I really don't see it. Let me tell you what I hear, twangy, jingling guitars, annoying vocals (and remember this is coming from a guy who has no problem with Death & Black-Metal vocals), out of tune guitars, and just a general sloppiness. Now, I don't think the quality of the recording is due to bad playing, or inferior knowledge on the production front, I think this was all done like this on purpose, which just makes it all the more frightening. Each song sounds almost the same as the last, it's like they just changed one note each time, and called it a new song. Even the tempo remains static for most of the disc. The songs as a whole, range from kind of cool (Crazy Girl), to just plain mind-numbingly brutal (You're Dumb). I guess there is a kind of cool vibe from the sheer rawness of it all, but that soon wears pretty thin. This is a group that would be best left to releasing 45s. The songs, heard in small amounts, might seem interesting, but after forty minutes, and 13 tracks that all sound the same, you get mighty fed up. It's like masturbating without any "super-glide", fun at first, but if you go too long, you'll end the night curled up in pain at the foot of the bed. If you're a glutton for punishment, there is also a hidden 14th track, which is just another example of what not to do in a recording studio. Now I'm sure others will find this to their liking, there must be a little niche market for this type of messy slop, but for me, and I think for most, this one is a pass. Maybe it would grow on me in time, but there's no way I'm sitting through this for a third time, so I guess we'll never know.
RATING = 3.5 Garage-Punk (Released 2003)
