BLACKROCK :
CLUTCHING AT STRAWS (EP)

Although this is my first exposure to Blackrock, the band has been around since '97, and has released two self produced CDs. This mini CD will certainly establish them as a band to be reckoned with in the Stoner-Rock scene. During the last few years, the band has managed to play with some pretty important bands in the stoner/doom genera; Orange Goblin, Nebula, Clutch, Cathedral, Alabama Thunderpussy, and most importantly Unida, during which JOHN GARCIA came out to sing Kyuss's "Big Bikes" with the band. The band sounds like they should call some dusty hole in the southern US home, but they reside in Nottingham UK. The lads making this heavy-ass rock are: Paul (guitar), Sean (vocals), Chris (guitar), Chis (bass), and Ryszard (drums). The 5 songs found on this CD very a bit in style. Opener "The Spectator" could have easily been an unreleased Kyuss song! Then, as we get into the meat on the disc, you find tracks such as "Dr. Satan's Robot", and "We Play For Trips", have more of a heavy southern rock vide, than a stoner vibe. But no mater which way a particular song leans, they're all heavy, and most importantly, they're all good. I recommend this disc, it's not mind-blowing, but it does rock pretty fuckin' hard. For some reason, I think the band can do better, and will do big things in the future… you can almost feel the untapped potential in these guys. If you're a Stoner-Rock dude, you'll need this in your CD collection, especially for when they're the next "Queens Of The Stone Age", and you can smugly say "I've been into these guys since "Clutching At Straws".
