BLOOD OF CHRIST :
ANTHOLOGY III : BREEDING CHAOS

If someone were to have given me a copy of this disc blind, (as in no band name or nothin') and had asked me where I thought this band came from, I would have confidently replied with Sweden or Norway. I would have "bet the farm" that these guys were Scandinavian. However, I would have been screwed, as Blood Of Christ hail not from the frozen metallic realms of Northern Europe, but rather from my own backyard of Toronto Canada. This is the band's third full-length, as well, they have also appeared on a handful of Canadian compilation CDs. The line up has shifted greatly over the coarse of the last 10 years. (Yes that's right, they have been around 10 years!) The current incarnation is Jason Longo (founding member) - percussion, Dan Hulse - vocals, bass & keyboards, and Jeff Longo (founding member) - guitars. The sound the band is pushing is a combination of Scandinavian flavored (Melodic?) Death Metal, (you can pick your own band, but I'll go with let's say... "At The Gates") and old fashion Doom Metal (think My Dying Bride, Opeth, Insomnium, early Paradise Lost and Katatonia). Plus, there are sonic snippets pulled from the worlds of Thrash and Black Metal (Enslaved anyone?) as well. At various times, Rotting Christ (fittingly) springs to mind as well. The songs travel along at a speedy pace; they don't tend to bog down like Opeth and My Dying Bride often do. Sure, at some points it's sort of a mid-paced thing, but that never lasts too long before the thundering bass drums come back in to crush your skull. The vocals range from clean, crisp, and melodic, to over the top, Death-Metal, guttural barking! Or as the kids would say, totally sick! The disc as a whole is pretty damn impressive, easily on par with the output of the bands mentioned above. Breeding Chaos is dark, heavy, fast, crushing, and possesses an atmosphere so thick you could chew on it. If ya wanna learn more about the band, check them out at thebloodofchrist.com.
RATING = 8 Blackened Melodic Death Metal (Released 2004)
