BLOODROSE :
INTO OBLIVION

This is the debut disc from Bloodrose, and it's an impressive entry into the world of Metal. Their particular little sub genre is Melodic Black-Metal, or what some people are calling Symphonic or Romantic Black-Metal. What this all means, is that added to the usual buzz of guitars, and hyper fast drumming found in Black-Metal, is a generous helping of keyboard work, which supplies thick layers of melody over the razor sharp guitars. I guess the closest comparison for most people would be Cradle Of Filth, but Bloodrose actually has much more keyboarding going on than Dani Filth and the boys. Now, fans of Pure Black-Metal will be cringing in fear at the mention of keys, but they will be giving up on some great music if they let their preconceived judgment stop then from checking out this band. The playing, courtesy of ; Teppo Jalkanen - lead guitar, Ville Rasanen - rhythm guitar, Jari Haapasalo - vocals, bass, Esa Mikkola - keyboards, and Teemu Peltonen - drums, is ultra tight. The songs are strong, and the resulting combination of melody and speed is something to behold. It's truly amazing how they bring these two contrasting elements together. There are even times on this disc, especially during the last track, "Final Darkness Falls", when I'm reminded of some of the heavier Goth-metal bands out there, such as Sins Of Thy Beloved, or Trail of Tears. Great stuff, but I think they have a little work before they can challenge Cradle Of Filth for the throne.
