BLUT AUS NORD :
THE WORK WHICH TRANSFORMS GOD

Blut Aus Nord are a long running, cult-like Black-Metal band from France. They were formed in 1994 as a one-man band known as "Vlad" (which by the way, released two demos). They are now an odd trio, they go by strange stage names (the norm for the genre), but also keep their physical appearance a bit of a secret as well. The band members, and their contributions to the CD are as follows; W.d.Feld (Electronic Percussions, Percussions, Programation, Synthetic Sounds), GhOst (6 strings Bass, Fretless Bass, Conceptual Elaboration), and Vindsval (Howling of God, Crying Guitars, Creation of Disharmony, Conceptual Elaboration). This is not your typical Black-Metal band. They do not sound remotely like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth, Emperor, or Darkthrone. The music is more soundscape-ish (if that term can be applied to this genre). It's very dark, macabre and sinister. There is a thick, very unsettling, nightmarish tone throughout the whole thing. Compared to their genre contemporaries, the music on "The Work Which Transforms God" is quite slow. Let me try and paint you a picture. First, lets start with a canvas of very Lo-Fi, old-school, "Necro" Black-Metal. Next, think of songs like Hellhammer's classic "Triumph Of Death", and Celtic Frost's "Danse Macabre" and "Necromantical Screams". The songs of Blut Aus Nord do not sound exactly like these golden oldies, but there is a similar experimental quality, so try to apply that to the musical canvas in your mind. Lastly, add some early Burzum, and slow it all down to a mid-paced plod, something like the droning of early Godflesh, and some of these modern Doom-Metal bands out there. I know it all sounds kind of weird, but that's exactly the point. It's not an album that you're gonna play every day, nor one that will have you thinking, "damn, I gotta get home to spin that new Blut Aus Nord disc" while you're at work. However, when you're in a certain mood, this CD is gonna be a Godsend (or should that be Satansend?). I can see this being excellent background music while making your way through dark video games such as Quake 1, or the new Doom III. Very cool, and very different.
