THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE :
SPACEGIRL AND OTHER FAVORITES

This is a hard CD to get a handle for. Originally it was a vinyl release back in 1993, with only 500 printed, but now everyone can have a copy, and with six bonus cuts added as well. The liner notes go on about how these songs are basically a collection of odds and ends recorded over a period of many years, a collection of "could be's", "what ifs" and "should have beens", the "studio trash" of main man Anton Alfred Newcombe's early days in the recording studio. So, as you can guess, some tracks work while other fail miserably. It's hard to describe the overall sound, but I'll go with; "mellow, art/alternative rock, with semi punk moments". How does that grab ya? I'll go on record as saying I enjoyed the disc, but it didn't really managed to make any sort of impact on me. I could care less if I ever heard it again, but on the other hand, if my woman took to playing it every day, that wouldn't bother me either. I guess the word here is "mediocre". You college-rock kids might dig it, but for me, the biggest reaction this'll get is a shrug of my shoulders in indifference. This is the sort of "middle of the road" disc, that if one song got promoted well, they could be the next big thing, but chances are, that ain't gonna happen.
