CAGE :
DARKER THAN BLACK

Cage (not the band fronted by ex-Black Sabbath singer, Tony Martin) was born in San Diego in 1992, and "Darker Than Black" is their third full-length outing. The band's ranks include; Mike Giordano (bass) - Dave Garcia (guitars - Sean Peck (vocals) - Anthony Wayne McGuiniss (guitars) - and Mike Nielsen (drums). Also appearing on this disc are Roy Z (Halford) and Joe Floyd (Warrior), both do guest solos on "March Of The Cage", and Roy also does the guitar solo on "Wings Of Destruction". So, on to the music, what can one say except holy crap?! This thing smokes. They have taken the Power-Metal of the late 80s and early 90s, and given it a stiff kick in the ass. The first song, "Kill The Devil", is a monster, and should have been the title track for Judas Priest's follow up to Painkiller! It's just as furious, and just as catchy. Sean mostly uses a clean vocal style resembling Halford, but also touches on the black and death vocal styles as well (see "Chupacabra" and "White Magic"). At times during this disc, you'll be reminded of your favorite moments from bands such as; Metal Church, Savatage, Judas Priest, Halford, Iron Maiden, and Iced Earth. All these great acts are thrown into the mix, and the result is simply brilliant. It's killer CDs like this, that really show you how low Judas Priest has fallen since Halford split the band. Anyone that was ever into this classic style of Metal would find it virtually impossible not to love this disc. I don't care what you're into now, maybe you've moved on to Black-Metal, Stoner-Rock, or even Techno. No matter, when you hear this, your head will automatically start the old-school nod of approval, as a big silly grin creeps across your face. It's such a shame that this type of Metal is so "un-cool" with the kids in North America these days, if this was released in '88, Cage would have been playing stadiums. Not a weak tune in the bunch, thank god there are still some bands keeping this sound alive. For all the info you need, check out the official web page.
