THE CALIBAN SESSIONS # 1

This is an odd little CD. The first in a new series of "jam" CDs. El Doom, a veteran Oslo producer, who has worked with bands like Gluecifer and Mayhem, and also the main man behind the great Stoner/Doom band Thulsa Doom, invited a bunch of Oslo musicians to his place for a weekend of drinking and music. This 6 song CD is the end result, and features members of: Thulsa Doom, The Cumshots, Oslo Motherfuckers, Black Debbath, Amulet, JR Ewing, Born Electric, Russian Poker, Insense, Piledriver, and Brut Boogaloo. This is extremely cool in theory, but does it actually pay off in practice? Sort of…. The 6 tunes very greatly in style, from the punk sounds of "Little Hippie Girl" to the 70s influenced "The Genuine Caliban Grooves". An interesting spin for sure, but I don't see myself pulling this out too often in the future. As you can imagine from a project of this nature, there is no real consistency from song to song, but each is sort of uniquely cool. For fans of any of the above-mentioned bands, or fans of the Norwegian punk and doom scenes, this will soon be a collector's item. You'll probably dig it, but I don't think it's going to blow anyone's mind.
