CALLENISH CIRCLE :
FORBIDDEN EMPATHY

If in any way, you're into the metallic sub-genre that's unfortunately referred to as "Melodic Death-Metal", then chances are that you're also familiar with the Dutch band "Callenish Circle". They have been making some strong waves over the last few years with their two Medal Blade releases, 2002's "Flesh Power Dominion" and 2003's "My Passion Your Pain". What the casual fan might not know, is that they had a life before Metal Blade. Of course the hard-core fan knows this, but has probably had a hard time tracking down the older material. If you were lucky enough to find it in the US, it would have been on import, and probably cost you way too much. Well, this 2-disc set is the answer to your prayers! Well, unless you already shelled out big bucks for the band's first two full-lengths, their mini CD, and a tenth generation copy of their demo, in that case, you're just gonna be pissed. But hey, them's the breaks... This has to be the best "bang for your buck" ever offered up by a record label. This surfaced in Europe last year on Karmageddon Media, and is out now in North America on Candlelight USA. Here is what you get, 29 songs on 2 discs, this includes in full: "Drift Of Empathy" (1996 full-length), "Graceful... Yet Forbidding" (1999 full-length), "Escape" (1998 E.P.), "Lovelorn" (1995 demo-tape), and an exclusive track taken from the "And The Ravens Left The Tower" compilation. Plus, it has all been remastered! Now the best part, it's priced at the regular price of a single disc! As far as the music goes, well, it kicks ass! I would say it's even better than their later stuff. It has a grittier, almost UK Doom-Metal feel to it, sort of like the very early stuff from Paradise Lost. I guess if you mixed the early days of Sentenced, In Flames, and the before mentioned Paradise Lost, you'd have a rough approximation of the vibe here. Doomy, deathly, and thrashy, with well-structured songs, what else can ya ask for? Musically, I would give this an "8", but I think I have to add a full point for the overall value of this package, it's just awesome! Fans will definitely need this, and if you're a newbie to the sounds of CC, what better way could there be to get acquainted? Fore more info, check out callenish-circle.com.
