CARNIVORE :
CARNIVORE / RETALIATION

How do I review these CDs??? These albums came out originally in the mid-late 80s. Do I review them sort of "as of" 1987, or like they were brand new today, or as a Type-O-Negative fan? Well, I’ll try and hit on all 3. For those that don’t know, Carnivore is a thrash band from the 80s that was fronted by Peter Steele of Type-O-Negative fame. The first self titled album came out in 1985. During this period the band dressed up like rejects from the Road Warrior at live gigs, as if they were from some not too distant future. The second album came out in 1987, by this time the costumes were gone, and the band moved to more "real" topics lyrically. Carnivore is loaded with controversy, if you think the lyrics on Type-O’s first CD, "Slow, Deep and Hard" are controversial, then you better be prepared before you spin these discs. The lyrics here make "Slow, Deep and Hard" look like a Barny sing a long CD. Songs like "USA for USA", "S.M.D." (Suck My Dick), and "Race War" are just a few that got people up in arms. Now granted, these are done kind of "tongue and cheek", and usually come out as a positive message, for example, the last lyrics in "Race War" is "everybody loses". Of course, most critics don’t make it to the end of the song before they start screaming. This is not the first time these 2 albums have been on CD, in 1989 a double CD was issued (minus a few songs) that was plastered with neo-nazi looking swastikas (on the CD and booklet) these are missing on the reissues, no comment here, take it as you will. Now onto the music, these do sound dated, which is unavoidable, they are old school thrash, with the occasional hard-core bridge. Peter’s voice is still very prominent, as is his distinctive bass tones. If you can imagine a heavier version of Type-O’s first CD, then you’re almost there. All the songs here are remastered, and sound better than they ever have. Each CD also includes 3 bonus tracks (early demo versions), so even if you have the old vinyl, you will be missing out if you don’t have these. As a thrash band for that era, they were near the top of the pack, as a new band today, they would sound out of place. As an interest to Type-O fans, these are a must, but I doubt that you’ll play them as much as your Type-O CDs. Were they a racist band? That’s too big of an issue to discuss here, read the lyrics yourself and decide.
RATING = 7 (for both) Thrash Metal (Released 2001)
