CHILDREN OF BODOM :
ARE YOU DEAD YET?

OK, confession time, this is the first Children Of Bodom CD that I've ever heard from front to back. Sure, I've heard the odd track here and there on compilations etc., but this is the first time I've sat down to digest a whole album of theirs from start to finish. Well, I must say, I don't know what all the fuss is about. So many head-bangers out there in the world of Metal go on and on about this Finnish band to no end, and frankly, I can't see why. This disc itself has received rave reviews from many respectable sources, but yet again I'm at a loss to explain it. Now, while the album doesn't down-right suck or anything, it does seem pretty average, and rather uneventful. The sound, on what is the band's fifth full-length, is a blend of Thrash, Black, Melodic-Death, and Power-Metal (complete with keyboards) with the dashiest dash of Hard-Rock thrown in for good measure. It's rather entertaining, and makes for good drinking music, but in the end it fails to make a lasting impression of any kind. Maybe it's just a case of "over-hype", or maybe the band just fails to strike a cord with me. Either way, I won't be spinning "Are You Dead Yet?" all too often.
