CHIRLEISON :
A WHISPER

This Italian band, up until 2000, was originally known as Essences, and released the album "Nebulae" in '97. That former incarnation of the band was a little more Gothic in nature, while their reincarnation as "Chirleison" sees them moving in more of a "romantic neo-folk" direction, which for you laymen, could be called "Goth-lite". The band is a trio, from the island of Sardinia, and they are made up of; Alessia Cicala - vocals & flute, Mara Lasi - keys & drum machine, and Daniele Serra - guitar & drum machine. The band's sound is very laid back and mellow. Alessia's angelic vocals are light and airy, and seem to float effortlessly on top of Daniele's subdued acoustic guitar work. While listening to the disc, it's all very pleasant, soothing, and enjoyable. However, once done, nothing really sticks in the mind to make you want to go back for a second helping. It may just be the nature of the band's new chosen genre, but there just doesn't seem to be enough meat on the bones, so to speak. The sound, which was mastered by Barry Galvin of Mephisto Walz, is lush and full. It's just too bad that there were no hooks or really memorable rhythms for him to work with. Still, like I said, the disc is enjoyable, the question is, will you remember it enough a month or two down the road to say, "hey, am I ever in the mood for that Chirleison disc"!
