CIVET :
MASSACRE

Interesting pick for a band name, the Civet (or Civet Cat) is the cute little nocturnal racoon-weasely looking critter that is believed to carry the SARSs virus. Plus, if you're wearing a perfume made by Chanel, Cartier, or Lancome right now, chances are pretty good that you have trace amounts of Civet excretion on your face, scraped from the poor fellow's perineal glands (or anal sacs). Just thought you'd like to know... Anyway, enough with the biology lesson, we all know learning sucks, we're here to talk about Punk rock baby! So, when looking at the cover of "Massacre", right away you're struck by the image of these very sexy women all sprawled out on the floor, covered in blood. It's a strong image, and one that once again proves the timeless allure of sex and violence. Duane Peters over at Disaster Records also knows this allure, as he has taken this young, edgy band under his experienced wing. The press release for this sultry Southern California band says that they are "fresh out of high-school". I find this a little hard to swallow, as these hot (did I mention they were good looking yet?) gals look a lot older than high-school kids. Not "bad" older, just older, like mid 20s or something. And tuff, as beautiful as these chicks are, they're also the kind of woman that would scare the shit out of most men. Hell, I wouldn't mess with 'em. These gals are certainly not the Donnas, that's for sure. If the two bands were in prison together, the girls of Civet would make the Donnas their "bitches" on the first day. Ok, let's all take a little break and imagine how that might turn out... mmmmmm... bitches. All right, back to the CD at hand. The lead off track "Closet Death" kicks in without warning, and the vocals from "Liza Graves" come flying at you sounding like an insane Courtney Love on "speed". (Or whatever drug Courtney isn't usually on when she performs). Each song is absolutely (to borrow from Pantera) "fuckin hostile"! It's all very fast and very aggressive, it makes anything from L7 seem like top-40 in comparison. These gals are the real deal, and could easily put to shame 90% of the more testosterone-laden bands out there. For More info, you can find the band at civetcivet.com.
RATING = 8 Punk (Released 2005)
