CJ SLEEZ :
BACK FROM THE BRINK

Let me set the tone for this review, "Back From The Brink" fucking rocks! It rocks hard, and it rocks fast! I absolutely love this thing! If it were porn, I'd jerk myself dry over it in about two minutes flat! Well actually, now that I'm looking at that cover again maybe I could jus... um, oops, ah... never mind, ok I digress, let's check this sucker out shall we? Toronto based artist CJ Sleez, the band's namesake, and lovely vocalist who we see on the cover, is a long time supporter of a brand of rock n' roll we don't see too much of these days. I'm talking about the much-maligned genre of glam/sleaze rock. Call it Punk, or call it Metal, it doesn't really matter, cause it all boils down to the same basic ingredients; guitar, leather, booze, attitude, and more guitar. Now, first of all, let's set the record straight, I'm not talking about the over-produced, watered down, power balled-laced shite we know as Hair-Metal. This is its uglier, greasier, alcoholic, drug-addicted, homeless, chain-smoking, crime-committing cousin. This is the darker edged stuff, reminiscent of bands such as the Space Age Playboys, the New York Dolls, AC/DC, Dirty Rig, The Toilet Boys, the Backyard Babies, Iggy Pop, Circus Of Power, The Sinisters, (early) Hardcore Superstar, and dozens of other gutter-dwelling miscreants. This is the sort of music that can simultaneously start both a party, and a fight. On this CD EP we have 6 songs (plus a bonus video of an older track for your PC). Each cut is packed with enough energy to demo a club's PA system, and enough hooks to keep it rattling around in your brain for days on end. CJ's raspy voice is strong enough to peel the paint off the walls, but don't worry, you'll warm up to it pretty quick. If you're getting sick of all the overly serious posturing in the worlds of Indie/Punk/Metal, and just want to get loaded and have a fuckin' good time, this is where you should start. For more info, check out cjsleez.com. As a side note, I'm adding every song here to my personal annual "party-mix" compilation.
RATING = 9 Sleaze-Rock (Released 2005)
