CLOSTERKELLER :
NERO

Closterkeller (no I don't know what the name means) is one of the longest running Goth-Metal bands in Poland. Actually, since they started out in 1988, they're really one of the longest running Goth-Metal bands in the entire world. What I find the most shocking, and hardest thing to believe, is that I was woefully unaware of their existence until only a few short days ago. If you're currently unfamiliar with the band, like I was last week, the closest comparison I can make is to the latest stuff from Theatre Of Tragedy, namely the "Musique" and "Assembly" CDs. They don't sound exactly the same, but there are big similarities. Both bands have gorgeous female vocalists with killer voices, both bands maintain a Gothic atmosphere and a Metallic edge, but at the same time both bands have enough keys and electronics going on that their songs would not feel out of place in a dance club. If you're too mainstream to know who Theatre Of Tragedy are, I guess we could then say they are like Evanescence, if you added a bunch of electronics and dance beats. The band's line up has apparently been a little on the unstable side over the years, but currently, the band is: vocalist Anja Orthodox, Michal Rollinger on keyboards, drummer Gerard Klawe, Freddie on guitar, and Pucek on bass. Since their inception, they have had six full-length studio CDs, an EP, 2 live CDs, a "best of" collection, and a live DVD! Anja usually sings in Polish, but the band has issued three of their discs in English as well. The three English offerings, complete with Anja's thick, ultra-sexy accent are: "Blue" (1990), "Graphite" (1999), and 2003's "Nero", which is what we are looking at now. Musically this is just fantastic, catchy memorable songs, and stellar vocals from the raven-haired, goth-goddess Anja. The danceable tunes are all wrapped in a cloak of guitar driven Metal. Sometimes the Metallic element fades to the background for a while, but it always comes crashing back. This diverse sound has gained them a very wide and mixed following. They would fit right in playing with Sisters Of Mercy, London After Midnight, or Tristania. I can't imagine that fans of any of those bands would not fall instantly under Closterkeller's spell. I obviously can't compare this to their past efforts, but if there older stuff is anywhere near as good as Nero, then I have a large back catalogue of discs to buy. For more info, you can check the band out here.
RATING = 8.5 Goth-Metal (Released 2004)
