NOUVEAU GLOAMING

Ok, what we have here is a sort of international Black-Metal super-group project thingy. We have members from both the UK and Norway, there is; Kvohst (Void) on vox, Viper, aka Vicotnik (DHG / Ved Buens Ende) on bass, and Aiwarikiar (Ulver) on drums, plus Vyttra and Aort on guitar. The deal here is that the band is attempting to meld the worlds of early 90s, true Norwegian Black-Metal and the modern avant-garde scene. To be blunt, it doesn't work. The band smokes when they're in old-school mode. The opening track, "The Cotton Optic" is a fantastic Darkthrone inspired piece of genius, but after that it's all down hill. With such a mind-shredding opening, one can't help but be disappointed as the remainder of the disc just plods along at a slow to mid pace, while only showing its teeth occasionally. Now slow doesn't necessarily mean bad, but this just seems to go nowhere, and it takes all Christing day to get there. There are some interesting ideas here and there, but they seem underdeveloped, and basically wasted. Too bad, because as that first track was playing, I was thinking this was gonna be one of the Black-Metal discs of the year, but what can you do?
