THE COFFIN LIDS :
'ROUND MIDNIGHT

I've never professed to be any kind of expert on the subject of Garage-Rock, because in reality, ...I just ain't! To put in academic terms, you could say that I've only ever taken a few "electives" in that particular area of study, and have spent most of my musical edification pursing my major in Metal, while adding minors in both Punk and Goth. However, that being said, basic Rock n' Roll is universal, and I knows whats I likes whens I hears it! And I likes Boston's Coffin Lids! I would love to be able to sit here and offer up the names of obscure bands from 40 years ago that these guys resemble, but I can't, because frankly, I just don't know 'em. The band's name, and a few of the song tiles (Frankenstein, Creepy Crawl, Tonight You're Going To Die In My Garage) from this sophomore release, hint at the Lids being a Horror-Punk, or at least a horror themed outfit, but they really aren't part of that genre. However, the music does indeed have a sort of retro B-movie or "drive-in" vibe going on, that is comparable to most bands pushing the horror thing. Their sound is energetic, spontaneous, and raw. ...very raw in fact. I mean if you wanna talk about production? Forget about it! Any production work that was done, was to probably make them sound even more unrefined. It's as though these recordings were dug out of some long lost box of tapes. A box that was put into storage back when women wore cats-eye sunglasses, their hair in a flip, and those cock-teasing ultra-miniskirts! Basically, 'Round Midnight makes releases from big name modern Garage bands such as the Hives, Vines, and the White Stripes et al. sound like later-day Rush albums. This is some solid stuff. Standouts are many but include; "Teenage Shakedown" and "I'm Going To Have My Way With The 5.6.7.8's". Yes, a little ditty dedicated to the Japanese girl group that Quentin Tarantino pimped to the world in Kill Bill Vol. 1. For more info, check out coffinlids.com.
