COL. KNOWLEDGE & THE LICKITY SPLITS :
FALL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN WITH...

I love getting discs from Bomp/Alive Records. Why you ask? Well, because they always seem to put out some of the most original, and interesting underground rock imaginable. Every band and subsequent disc on their roster is like a welcomed breath of fresh air amidst the smog-filled glut of lacklustre Metalcore CDs piled up on my desk. Regardless of the grade I finally end up bestowing upon it, each disc always seems to have an inherent coolness factor of at least "10". Today we take a look at the 60s throwback band "Col. Knowledge & The Lickity Splits". That band name alone makes checkin' this one out worthwhile. The group is from Athens Georgia, and is made up of four kids in their early 20s, who have somehow collectively managed to avoid the influences of MTV and current pop culture. They have tapped into the vibe of the 60s, and put out a debut disc that seems to have been miraculously displaced in time by about 40-odd years! I'll admit I'm no 60s Garage-Rock expert, but man do these guys sound authentic! The band recorded everything on an old 8-track machine, and the resultant sound is all sort of lo-fi, in a cool sort of way. Plus, there's enough organ work going on here to make you wanna go out and buy a Hammond (or something similar) to make your own home recordings. Now, while I love the band's sound, I found that the songs themselves kind of left me a little cold. The disc is fun enough to listen to, but the tunes just don't have what it takes to lodge themselves into the memory banks of your overcrowded cranium. This is actually kind of a pisser! On one hand we have a band with a sweet-ass sound, but on the other hand, the songs are lacking, so in the end, it all washes out to something average. If these guys could just tighten up their song writing, and get a few well-placed hooks in there, they would be phenomenal. Fore more info, you can find the band at colknowledge.com.
RATING = 6 60s Garage-Rock (Released 2005)
