CONTRIVE :
PROSPER

Contrive... That's an odd name. I'd have called them "chazzwazzers". I don't know about you, but when I go looking for a new kick-ass extreme Metal band, I don't usually think, "OK let's see what Australia has to offer this month". Well, that might just change as Contrive from down under, has hit the scene in a big fucking way. The trio consists of Paul A. Haug on lead vocals & guitars, Tim Stahlmann on bass & vocals, and Andrew Haug on drums. The disc is only a seven-song EP, but wow, that's all you need to make your jaw drop, and your tongue fall out. The songs are short (ranging from 1:21 to 3:41) which is sort of reminiscent of Slayer's "Reign In Blood" opus. The best way I can describe the sound, is to say it's like an updated version or early Sepultura. I know, that doesn't make much sense, but tuff shit. It has that same intensity, the same heaviness, even the vocal delivery is similar. You could easily splice Sep's "Dead Embryonic Cells" or "Territory" between any of the songs on Prosper, and no one would think them out of place. What the band adds to that winning patented Sepultura sound, is a tiny bit of melodic groove, just enough to make each track stand out on its own, and cause your body to sway while your head-bangin' your brains out. Just when you think you can't take any more, the band shows us mercy with a brief mellow guitar interlude called "The Loss". However, it is short lived, and what may be the most unrelenting track on the disc, "Pushing" directly follows, and proceeds to pulverize all in its path. This will definitely appeal to fans of early 90s Thrash, as well as those obsessed with present day Melodic Death and extreme Metal. As an extra bonus, there is a CD-ROM multi media portion that lets you get to know the band a bit, cool. These guys will soon be a household name, they'll be every where, they'll be in the lift, in the lorry, in the bond wizard, and all over the malonga gilderchuck.
