COSMIC BALLROOM :
STONED, BROKE, AND READY TO RUMBLE

Yes my friends we have another kick-ass Punk Rock band outta Sweden. They seem to grow these fun-loving, Glam-Punk outfits on trees over there. The band formed in 1998, the same year the Backyard Babies broke with "Total 13", and it's no coincidence. It is quite obvious from the attitude-filled, party anthems on SBARTR, that the Cosmic Ballroom boys pretty much worship their fellow countrymen. In fact, many of these songs could easily be spliced into the middle of the last few Backyards Babies' albums, and no one would be the wiser. The press releases also refers to bands such as the Wildhearts and Shotgun Messiah as touch points (which I can hear), but they also refer to the Hellacopters, which I don't pick up on at all. I do however hear hints of early Hardcore Superstar in the mix. If you know who any of the bands are that were just mentioned, you probably already have a good idea in your head of what this disc sounds like... it's the 80s underground L.A. vibe for a new generation. For some of you this might be old news, as the disc first surfaced in 2003 on Kick Music, this is actually a reissue on ZYX / Punk 'n Drunk Records. However, if you have the old disc, and plan to dismiss this version, you should know that there is a bonus cut, "Faster Than Me" from their first CD, "Rock 'n Roll Overdose", along with an accompanying video. Overall, the disc is a lot of fun, good music for drinkin' and smoking, and much better than the last outing from their mentors (the complete and utter letdown that was "Stockholm Syndrome"). Still, there is a sense of "been there, done that", as so many other Scandinavian bands have been pushing this sound for the last six or seven years now. However, if you’re a fan of the genre, you won't be disappointed, just don't expect it to blow your mind. For more info on this Swedish import, check out cosmicballroom.com.
