CRAWLING SUN :
LES MERCHANDS DE DESASTRES

This is one of those odd CDs that's hard to get a grip on. Lets start with the basics; the band is from White Rock BC Canada. Those responsible for this lengthy (12 tracks, and about 63 min.) disc are; Bryan Rode (vocals / keys), Terry Okrusko (drums), Sasquatch (guitar / bass). Now, on to the music, there is a strong 70s vibe running throughout the CD, but the band manages to steer clear of the Stoner-Rock thing, and manages to come out with a unique sound all their own. The songs range from slower ballads, to mid-paced rockers. All are executed with skill and passion. The down side seems to come from songs overstaying their welcome. Each song has a good idea in it, but instead of presenting it in a sharp concise package, the band tries to milk every drop of potential out of it. It has been said many times, by many people, but you should always leave them wanting more. If the band could trim the fat on this disc, and get it down to about 50 - 55 minutes, I bet the songs would be more memorable, and the listener would be much more incline to reach for the play button again when it was all over. Still, if ya dig that 70s sound, but think all these Fu Manchu / Kyuss wanna be bands sound all the same, this will definitely give you hope for the future. The bio I have lists crawlingsun.com as their web page, but as I write this (Feb. 11 2003) the site seems to be down. And no, I have no idea why the CD title is in French, as the songs are all in English.
RATING = 6 70s Rock (Released 2002)
