CREMATORY :
REVOLUTION

The highly regarded German Goth-Metal band Crematory had been at if for a decade when they decided to pull the plug in 2001. But, as they say, you should never say never... It wasn't long before the band got together to record a song for a Metallica tribute disc, and that was apparently the only spark needed to rekindle the soldering fire within the Crematory camp. (Get it? Fire - Crematory, aren't I just so clever?) So, this is the big "come-back" album for the band, sort of a career deciding release. Now, there has been a lot of blather on the ol' Internet about the band pulling a "Theatre Of Tragedy", and turning into a Gothic dance band. I want to put it straight, people are just overreacting. Although there are bits and pieces of electronica here and there, that is not the case. The band has always employed the use of keyboards, so they come as no shock, sure, they might be used a little more this time out, but all together, I would say "Revolution" is just continuing on to where 2000's "Believe" was leading us. However, I will admit that you could easily see a song like "Reign Of Fear" turning up on a dance floor near you. At the heart of it all though, Crematory are still a Metal band. The guitars are still there, the sound is heavy, and although we have a lot of clean vocalization going on, Gerhard (Felix) Stass still brings the old-school Death-Metal growl constantly to the forefront. The band, in my opinion, have managed to meld a perfect blend of old-school, early 90s Goth-Metal with hints of Industrial, Electronica, and dare I say it... Pop? No, not Pop in the way your thinking, simply in their ability to write an easily accessible hook, and incorporate it into the Crematory frame work ...something that is becoming a very rare element in heavy music these days. It might not be the disc some were expecting, it might sound a little too modern, or "non-metal" for some, but if you come with an open mind, you'll find that "Revolution" is easily one of the band's best efforts to date.
