CRIONICS :
ARMAGEDDON'S EVOLUTION

Well this is odd to say the least, a Metal band from Poland, and they're not on the Metal Mind label! Nope, it's true! It's Candlelight Records that has managed to add this blackened troop to their roster. First of all, it's the band that can't spell their own name right, not me. This is Crionics' second full-length assault on the music buying public, a follow up to their 2002 release, "Human Error: Ways To Selfdestruction". Collectors should note that there was a mini disc out before that in 2000 called "Beyond The Blazing Horizon". Anyway, the name of the game here is Black-Metal, in all it's corpse-painted glory! Now, I have to say, people are calling this "symphonic" Black-Metal, which is the term most people use to describe a band such as Cradle Of Filth, or others that are on the "outs" with the purists in the genre. Now, there are keys involved here, but they are somewhat restrained, and don't take away from the overall harshness of the music, so I really don't think the term symphonic fully applies. However, if in your mind, any addition of synths lands a band in that category, well then I guess they're in. The music is fast and furious as expected, with vocals that are harsh and scathing, keeping just shy of falling over to the guttural Death-Metal side of the extreme vocal spectrum. Influences come from all the usual suspects, Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child, and the mighty Emperor (they even include a cover of "The Loss And Curse Of Reverence" from their 1997 platter "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk"). I guess what separates these lads from the rest of the pack, is that there seems to be a solid trace of Death-Metal that permeates their satanic hymns, which along with seasoned Black-Metal fanatics, should lead to fans of bands like Morbid Angel and the like also falling prey to Crionics' sound. The songs are well structured, and make for some good air-guitar and head-banging moments. Now, you aren't gonna be running down the street, flashing the devil horns and proclaiming this as album of the year or anything, but it's a solid release, and a recommended buy for the "symphonic" Black-Metal aficionado.
