CROWHEAD :
FROZEN

Crowhead is a relatively new Goth-Metal act from Norway. Formed by Jo-Inge Slangsvold and Oyvind (Rym) Trinborg when their previous band, "Shadow Dancers", split up in 1999. This is their debut release, however there was a demo CD in 2000 called "Love Letter". The band is really just Jo and Rym, but helping them out on this CD is Fredrick Darum and Ted Skogmann (both ex-Apoptygma / Berzerk). My initial response to this disc was that it bore a close resemblance to the works of Finland's "To Die For". Both bands have very similar musical structures, with deep clean vocals and rich depressive melodies. They also have a similar approach to the "Metal" aspect of the music, never getting too heavy, and keeping a more traditional metal sound, although Crowhead has more Electronic bits happening then "To Die For", but nothing like the latest Theater Of Tragedy offerings. Crowhead also seems to have a bit more balls then the Finnish lads in T/D/F, and the music has a lot more forward momentum and rhythm, it's a more driving force. At the same time it's depressive, but if you're in your car, you'll notice that as you listen, you're starting to put the "peddle to the metal". My only complaint a bout this disc, is that I would have liked a little bit more of the harsher side of the band. Every now and then, there is a few seconds were the band starts to get a little heavier, and the vocals get a little rougher, here the music seems like it is going to get really exciting, but they always pull in the reigns. Even if the band doesn't want to get nasty musically, this is still a beautifully produced, excellent piece of Goth-Metal that any fan of the genre will need in their collection.
