DAM :
PURITY: THE DARWINIAN PARADOX

No, the early 90s Trash band "D.A.M." has not reunited, this is a different "Dam", although oddly enough, they are from the UK as well. Anyway, Dam has been at it since 1997, and seems to take their cue from the Death-Metal bands of old, both those from the US and Europe. I could list some band names at this point for comparison, but if you don't know the key players from the first wave of artists in this field, then you shouldn't even be reading this. Added on top of this signature sound is a good helping of modern Trash, and vocals that while harsh, never come off as the standard Death-Metal "Cookie Monster" variety. At times the vocal attack on this debut effort actually reminds me of the harried strains from Entombed's L.G. Petrov. The songs here are pretty cool, not mind blowing, but solid. Tempos are played with constantly, but the band tends to shine when they slow things down just a tad, and get a nice moshable rhythm going. Purity is an enjoyable disc to be sure. The band has managed to put a modern sheen to an old sound, what remains to be seen however, is if I still care about this a couple of months down the road... only time will tell. The last track on the CD, a cover of Carcass's 1991 classic "Forensic Clinicism / The Sanguine Article", is of note as it features guest appearances from Rob McAuslan (Labrat), Jason Netherton (Misery Index), Mike Harrison (Kommissar, ex-Misery Index, Psychotogen), Ben Goreskin (Gorerotted) and Paul Scanlan (ex-Akercocke). For more info, check the band out at dam.cjb.net.
RATING = 7 Thrashy Death-Metal (Released 2005)
